SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Brian Maienschein (San Diego) announced that his bill, AB 2009, requiring schools with athletic programs to have an automated external defibrillator (AED) was signed by Governor Brown. AB 2009 will help to save the lives of students who collapse during an exercise or sports activity due to heart failure.

“My bill will ensure that trainers and coaches have the equipment they need to save students who have heart trouble at school events.” Said Maienschein

Sudden cardiac arrest is the most common cause of death for student-athletes who collapse during school sport competitions. This bill will require schools to have at least one AED and ensure it is accessible to coaches, trainers and other authorized personal. AEDs increase an athlete’s chance of survival by 90 percent if used within one minute of heart failure.
