SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Brian Maienschein (San Diego) announced that his bill (AB 1766) to expand the availability of automated external defibrillators was signed by Governor Brown. AB 1766 will require all public swimming pools with lifeguard services to have an AED available. The new law also requires the Department of Education and Department of Public Health to create guidelines to improve pool safety at K–12 schools.
“We should do everything in our power to give lifeguards the tools they need to save lives,” said Maienschein. “My bill will ensure that lifeguards at all public pools in California have the best equipment available to save drowning victims.”
AED units are the most effective and inexpensive lifesaving devices to treat victims of cardiac arrest. Many, but not all, public swimming pools already provide AED units. This new law will promote safety and protect swimmers by updating the list of required lifesaving equipment at public pools to include AED units.
